This is a great card for frequent Walmart shoppers, especially if you shop online with the big box store, where the rewards rate is highest. Having no annual fee, a nice sign-up offer and a variety of rewards redemption options outside of Walmart also sweeten the deal.

A Generous Rewards Card for Walmart Shoppers

If you’re a regular Walmart shopper, you can earn generous rewards for your retail purchases using the Capital One® Walmart Rewards® Card. The card earns bonus cash back on Walmart store and fuel station purchases, Walmart.com purchases, restaurant dining, and on travel purchases. Unlike other store cards, you also have more flexible redemption options outside of covering Walmart purchases. As one of the largest retailers in the U.S. for groceries, clothes, landscaping supplies, or electronics, the Capital One Walmart Rewards Card offers a ton of value and opportunities to earn rewards for your everyday purchases.

Two Walmart credit cards are available — the Capital One Walmart Rewards Card, which can be used anywhere that accepts Mastercard®, and the Walmart Rewards Card, which is only accepted at participating Walmart locations. Capital One determines eligibility based on your credit, so if you’re not approved for the Capital One Walmart Rewards Card, you may be considered for the closed-loop store card.

Earning Rewards

Depending on your shopping habits, you could earn significant cash back in the first year through the card's sign-up bonus. The Capital One Walmart Rewards Card also rewards ongoing purchases at Walmart stores and other Walmart locations. But rewards earning isn't limited to just the Walmart ecosystem.

Here is how you can earn rewards:

  • 5% cash back at Walmart.com, including pickup and delivery
  • 2% cash back in Walmart stores and fuel stations
  • 2% cash back at restaurants
  • 2% cash back on travel purchases
  • 1% cash back everywhere else Mastercard is accepted

There is no cap on the amount of rewards you can earn, which is great because some cards limit rewards on certain spending categories.

The card's rewards rates are good to above average for a store credit card. You may find other rewards cards that earn higher rates in some categories, but overall, it's a solid option for frequent Walmart shoppers. Some cards offer higher rates at grocery stores but typically exclude Walmart purchases.

Redeeming Rewards

Some store credit cards only allow you to redeem rewards for in-store credit. The Capital One Walmart Rewards Card offers several redemption options.

  • Statement credits
  • Paper check by mail
  • Cover purchases at Walmart.com
  • Walmart gift cards and gift cards for other retailers
  • Travel

Points are worth approximately 1 cent each, but the value may vary depending on the redemption. You can use points as soon as they post or save them for a larger redemption, like covering flights or hotel bookings. There are no minimum redemption requirements.

Do Points Expire?

Cash-back rewards are converted to points and do not expire as long as your account is open. If you close your account, you will lose the rewards that are left unredeemed.

Recommended Credit Score

The Capital One Walmart Rewards Card requires good to excellent credit, which is generally considered a FICO score of 670 or higher.

You can check eligibility through the card's preapproval process, which won't negatively affect your credit score. If you don't meet credit and other eligibility requirements, the card issuer may approve you for the store-only card or no card.

Is the Walmart Credit Card Worth It?

The Capital One Walmart Rewards Card offers enough value to warrant a spot in your wallet if you're a regular Walmart shopper. With thousands of retail locations across the country and in over 20 countries and online and mobile shopping platforms, you can get rewarded for purchases with the retailer any time and from almost anywhere.

If you prefer other retailers to Walmart or your shopping trips are few and far between, this card is not for you. Depending on your shopping habits, a store card through your favorite retailer or a more flexible rewards card is probably a better fit. Popular retailers such as Target and Best Buy have respective credit cards that generously reward loyal shoppers.
